En noviembre de 1933, el contrabandista y financiero Juan March, preso por la Comisión de Responsabilidades del gobierno de la República desde junio del año anterior, se escapó de la cárcel dejando en ridículo a las autoridades republicanas. Con el escándalo de esa fuga, arranca El último pirata del Mediterráneo, biografía novelada del banquero mallorquín y feroz alegato político, publicado en 1934. Convertido en dueño y señor de la vida política española (lo mismo compraba periódicos que escritores o ministros), Juan March hizo todo lo posible por impedir la difusión de un libro en el que, pese a no aparecer con su verdadero nombre, se ponían al descubierto todas sus corruptelas e incluso su presunta participación en un crimen nunca del todo aclarado. No pudo impedir, sin embargo, que antes de la guerra se agotaran quince ediciones. La versión definitiva del libro, aparecida en 1937 y en la que los personajes y personajillos de esta crónica apasionante perdieron el transparente alias con que Manuel D.
